The Israelites went into battle against the Philistines, very much like today's narrative.
The Philistines took the Ark along their journeys but soon encountered various troubles and plagues that they believed were a result of having the Ark in their possession. They decided to return the Ark to the Israelites, along with an offering of golden objects as a gesture to appease the God of Israel.
